DIY Solar Power House

Buying inverter for a solar panel?

Hi, I bought 50 6X6 inch solar cells, I also bought a 40 amp diode, I still need to buy a battery, and inverter and a voltage controller, could you tell answer me the following questions:

1) I would like t build a small panel at first, (may be 10 X 10 inch), with that I would like (or at least to try) to power my laptop for the hole day, so I wont receive a very high amperage, yet, all the inverters I saw at e-bay are rated over 400 amp, if I buy a 400 amp inverter, can I use it with such a small amperage?
2) what about buying a small car inverter, will it work?
3) suggestion about the battery and the voltage controller will be kindly appreciated.

I’m guessing that each of those solar cells is just 0.5 volt at max power, so if you make a 12-inch square panel, you will get 2 volts – not enough for the inverter.

A car inverter is notoriously inefficient, but it would work if you connect it to a 12-volt battery. You cannot generally connect such an inverter to solar panels alone. The battery supplies the peak current that the inverter needs, and the panel charges the battery.

To charge a 12-volt battery, you will want 36 cells, generally, which give you an 18-volt panel. You can buy an inexpensive charge controller somewhere.

If your laptop will run off 12 volts directly, you can skip the inverter and be much more efficient. Or if the laptop runs of (say) 19 volts, you can use about 40 cells to get 20 volts, get the proper power plug from Radio Shack, and plug the panel directly into the laptop.

Cocogro Boss Coco Coir Grow Fiber 6X6” Multi Drain Bag: A $3.36 Botanicare has sourced the world’s most premium coir fiber. Cocogro has a very low salt content that is available in ¾” double-sieved long fibers to reduce dust and give ample space within the mix. Boss is made from 3/4” double-sieved coco coir fibers for increased air space to the root zone. Boss is exceptional because of its multi-drain capability and contains a coarse coir fiber mat on the bottom of the block to allow for free drainage and to keep coir fiber particles from draining out of the bag. Boss coir fiber is aged 18 to 24 months and is fully decomposed to ensure no pH or EC (TDS) drifts. Boss is compressed in a 5 to 1 ratio and is available in 6” x 6” and 87” x 8” sizes. Boss is wrapped in a horticultural grade poly bag that is white on the outside and black on the inside to insure a low temperature and no light to promote healthy root system. Just open the top of the bag and hydrate coir; Boss will expand to full size in just minutes. For optimum results We recommend that the Boss Coco Fiber Grow Blocks are soaked/decompressed with a solution of 15ml Cal-Mag Plus per gallon of water. This will condition the growing medium for cuttings or seedling and will minimize leaf yellowing after transplanting.
